Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
