Are You Able to Solve It? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Forged our Contemporary Globe
One can find numerous candidates for the title of “world’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, constructing a simple trading ship required approximately ten sawyers working over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, which converted logs into planks with virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could construct vessels faster than anyone else, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch naval, economic as well as artistic dominance across Europe and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Machine
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial authentic factory machine.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. One component transformed its rotary motion to up-and-down action for the saw. A separate mechanism changed the rotary movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the timber to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment per stroke.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts so they acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every downward motion while advancing on every upward stroke. It was a remarkably clever use of basic parts.”
Which brings us to the current puzzle. The task is for you to reimagine one of the fundamental ideas underpinning this historic machine.
Round and Up
Design a machine that turns circular motion to up-and-down motion. You have these components exclusively: A rotating disc. Two pins. Two bars. A “sleeve”, which is a tube or sleeve into which a single the bars will fit snugly. (Assume it is possible to mount components on a stand, so the components do not collapse.)
