Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also comprised leaders in various fields.
