Delhi Rises to Dangerous Haze Post Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" range.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the city showed an AQI above 500, which translates to 10x the safe threshold established by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than safe levels.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Developments

For the past four years, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that covers the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

However earlier this year, the recently formed local administration approached the highest court to request a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Enforcement

Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several monitoring devices throughout the capital recorded pollution spiking around the night hours to the most severe levels seen during celebrations in at least three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining air quality in their urban centers on contaminants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.

During celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak records ever measured in Beijing, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Various Contamination Contributors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a combination of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing toxic haze that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Impact

The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants calling home the capital region is significant, according to multiple investigations.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 early fatalities per year in Delhi.
