Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Nigerian School

Security breach at educational facility
Learning centers in northern Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The criminal group invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, police confirmed.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their dormitory, according to a statement.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Local residents informed journalists that the armed men then led a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.

In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Safety emergency in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in the past few months, with schools suffering the most of the conflict.
