Rampant Hearts Defeat Struggling The Hoops to Go 8 Points Clear
Match summary
- Kyziridis & Shankland secure victory for the hosts and propel them eight ahead at summit
- Callum McGregor cancelled out early Murray own goal
- Hosts go 13 games unbeaten for first time in 27 years
Rampant Hearts powered eight points clear of Celtic at the top of the Scottish top flight to bolster their early title credentials and worsen the struggles around Brendan Rodgers' side.
Alexandros Kyziridis' fine strike and a spot-kick from Shankland gave Derek McInnes' side a 3-1 lead that the title holders could not recover from.
The young defender - among three youth players in the Celtic starting lineup - scored an own goal early on to put the home side ahead at a bouncing their home ground, and it was the 22-year-old's foul that led to the penalty.
A stylish finish from McGregor of the season had quickly cancelled out the first goal, and the Swedish attacker almost put Rodgers' team in front, choosing placement over power and allowing Alexander Schwolow to save from close range.
But the unstoppable Hearts side seized control again to consign the visitors to back-to-back losses for the first time since 2023.
It also gives the Edinburgh side a commanding advantage at the summit.
The last time they were so far clear was in 2005-06 under George Burley, when they ultimately finished second - one of just four occasions that a team has not secured the title having held such a lead in the last three decades.
McInnes, whose Aberdeen side were second to Celtic on four occasions, has been at pains to downplay championship discussions, as Hearts seek their first top-flight crown since the 1960s.
The Celtic boss has experienced this previously at the club - both flawless and stuttering starts to a season. He's yet to finish second best.
But on Sunday's evidence, this Hearts team showed they need to be taken seriously.
Match Analysis: Hearts Capitalize of Weakened Celtic
The Edinburgh side started with the self-assurance of a side undefeated in the league this season - the popular attacker poked a cross in for the striker to fire off target.
The Glasgow team didn't help themselves with some uncharacteristic carelessness in possession and they buckled under their first real examination.
Claudio Braga's header was tipped onto the woodwork by Kasper Schmeichel and Shankland's return ball was turned into the net by the hapless defender, in for the absent center-back.
Celtic grew into the contest and started stringing passes together. From a flowing attack, the midfielder released the full-back to square for the captain, who rolled in.
Apart from the opportunity for Nygren, Celtic struggled to create much for striker Kenny or his replacement Shin Yamada amid the unavailability of injured forwards their key strikers.
Hearts rediscovered their energy and versatility in creating chances in the opposition half. The Greek forward, one of the finds of the club's scouting network, struck low past the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.
Almost straight away, the defender fouled Braga in the right side of the box and the penalty taker converted. And it could've been an even more handsome win, had replacement Ageu not been stopped by Schmeichel.
The visitors' performance after the break was somewhat summed up in a couple of moments involving big-money recruit Engles.
The midfielder's wayward free-kick delivery was in stark contrast to his midweek exploits in the continental victory over their Austrian opponents and the Belgium international was then yellow-carded for a professional foul.
Post-Match Comments
The Hearts manager: "You see how hard the players work, the team spirit. That's not sufficient on its own to win games week in, week out.
"What we have got, is skillful players. You're witnessing it from multiple individuals who have been here before. Recent additions are eager to show that.
"We're in a positive moment at the minute, but it's only three points. It's important for us to keep winning. We've got much work ahead, plenty to improve. After the first two rounds is normally an indication of your standing."
The Celtic boss: "The second goal was disappointing from our perspective. We didn't move when the ball went back as a line so when they pass the ball, they should have players offside but weren't. We have got to do better with the attempt.
"Plenty of matches to play for. It's still so early. It's only nine games in. Obviously, being eight points behind is not what we would want. The positive is there's so many games to play.
"We now have to focus on the here and now and look to achieve greater stability and better performance in our play."
What's Next for Both Sides?
