Stupidity and Royal Self-Entitlement Damaged Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet
This episode commenced with a single photograph, arguably the most consequential ever snapped of a royal family member.
There stood the Baron Killyleagh, arm-in-arm a teenage girl, while a companion beamed knowingly in the backdrop.
Lacking that snapshot, taken at a gathering in 2001, few would have credited the allegations of a adolescent who said she was moved across the sea and obliged to have perfunctory sexual encounters with a individual of the royal family?
An odd, revealing gesture by someone who had openly asserted to have not been aware of her, said he could no have had intimate contact with her, and yet provided a substantial sum of monarchical funds to settle a drawn-out lawsuit.
Over a Decade of Controversy
Considering this, discussions of the royals acting decisively to sever ties with Andrew are wide of the mark. This affair has persisted for the better part of 15 years since that photograph, and a further photo of Andrew strolling amiably with a notorious individual came to light.
- Arrogance: How long did his siblings, perhaps even his mother and father, realize that Andrew was so presumptuous?
- Questionable Associations: They must have realized, if his staff and the authorities were performing their duties, that he had some deeply disreputable friends given he publicly hosted them to estates.
- Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the family did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his wastefulness with taxpayer funds.
Trips were printed in public records: chopper flights from the royal residence to a golf course and back again in time for lunch, private flights instead of commercial flights, all for the comfort of "the travel enthusiast".
Existence of Entitlement
Additionally the arrogance which expected subservience when he walked into a space or the extreme obsession about his honorifics used on his official documents in communication to his personal acquaintances.
He could get away with it while his parent, who unaccountably spoiled him, was still living. The sovereign did at least strip him of public duties and ceremonial ranks in the consequence of his ill-fated and, we now know, untruthful television interview six years ago.
Latest Events
It was only in the last 14 days that events accelerated, following the publication of biographical works giving more grim particulars of his actions and that of his companions.
More information have again revealed Andrew's belief that he could escape deceiving about his contact with a convicted criminal.
The public (and the journalists) were far in advance of the monarchy. There was nobody of any significance to defend him, a result of all those years of arrogance.
Institutional Fears
The wiser family members realized that. The primary concern is to hand down the crown, if not as previously at least intact and unstained.
Over time the last 190 years trying to undo the legacy of earlier rulers, proving they are valuable, responsible and attentive to their citizens.
His actions endangered all that in jeopardy in an age when respect and privacy is no longer adequate.
Aftermath
Eventually, the famously hesitant sovereign was pressured more. There was little choice. The royal household had surrendered command of the account.
Currently the removal of designations and the ongoing and life-long personal shame that will pain Andrew most deeply.
- Downgrading: Demoted to just Mr Mountbatten-Windsor
- Prior Instance: The initial monarch to forfeit his honorifics in modern times
- Armed Forces: Particularly hurtful given his duty in the Falklands war
He remains a constitutional officer, on paper able to act for the monarch, and he is still in the succession to the crown, but none of these will ever happen.
Future Prospects
Can persons he meets still acknowledge him? Might they still make mistakes and call him Prince? Might they say Andrew,
Of course, he is not withdrawing to a common area, but to the monarchy's extensive estate at Sandringham.
In that place, he will be furnished by the sovereign with one of the royal residences and given some type of personal stipend.
This differs from his previous residence, where he paid a minimal lease for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit far, but even so it may not be adequate distance.
Outstanding Concerns
The situation continues. There are still documents in the possession of overseas authorities to be revealed.
- Political Pressure: Will legislators request additional information
- Monetary Probe: Or examine the waste of taxpayer funds
- Legal Possibility: There may even be a criminal probe into his behavior
Possibly for the time being the harm to the monarchy to the crown is restricted. The statement from the institution was evidently that the revocation of designations was what the king, and especially other senior family members, desired.
Altered Approach
No more illusion that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, notably, the concise announcement showed clearly that the royals were siding with the victim's account of occurrences.
Furthermore, for the premiere occasion they eventually showed regard for the affected individuals: "The measures are deemed necessary, regardless of the truth that he continues to deny the allegations against him."
Ultimately it is entitlement, self-seeking and inactivity that will kill the institution. In his stupidity, personal excess and venality, Andrew seems never to have grasped that lesson.
