Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research suggests that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural changes.
